5 DFM Checks Before Sending a CNC Part for Quotation

Good RFQs reduce assumptions. Before sending a CNC part for quotation, check these five areas in your model and drawing.

1. Identify Critical Dimensions

Mark the dimensions that affect fit or function. Applying tight tolerances everywhere increases setup, inspection and scrap risk without improving the part.

2. Match Tolerances to Function

Use general tolerances for non-critical geometry and specific limits only where needed. Include geometric tolerances when form, orientation or position matters.

3. Specify Material and Condition

Call out the full material grade and any heat-treatment condition. "Aluminum" or "stainless steel" alone leaves too much room for interpretation.

4. Define the Surface Finish

State whether the part is required as machined, anodized, plated, painted or polished. Add color, texture, masking and cosmetic requirements where relevant.

5. Keep the Model and Drawing Consistent

Revision, units and dimensions should agree across all files. If the drawing overrides the model, make that priority explicit.
